Clean your hands 5 May Campaign 2026

Why is sharing knowledge about hand hygiene still so important? Because it helps stop the spread of harmful germs in healthcare. Save Lives Clean your Hands. Celebrate 5 May 2026 with SARAYA.

On 5 May, the World Health Organization celebrates World Hand Hygiene Day as part of the global SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign. Now in its 18th year, the 2026 campaign, under the slogan “Action Saves Lives,” encourages taking practical steps in hand hygiene to protect healthcare workers, patients, and communities.

Proper hand hygiene remains one of the most effective ways to prevent infections. When performed at the right moments during patient care, it significantly reduces health care-associated infections (HAIs). Beyond protecting patients and healthcare workers, these actions help reduce the burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and lower healthcare costs.

The campaign also highlights the role of healthcare environments that support good hygiene practices. Access to clean water, sanitation, proper waste management, and adequate hygiene facilities is essential for safe care. These basic resources help ensure that patients receive dignified treatment and that healthcare workers can perform their duties safely and effectively.

In 2026, the WHO encourages everyone involved in healthcare to strengthen their commitment to hand hygiene and infection prevention, from national health authorities to individual hospitals. Monitoring hand hygiene and providing feedback are key steps in creating safer healthcare environments and protecting lives.

At SARAYA, we support global hand hygiene efforts by providing education, training, and hygiene solutions. Together, we can take action that saves lives and promotes safer, healthier communities. For more information, visit our healthcare solutions page.

Objectives of World Hand Hygiene Day 2026

  • Promote optimal hand hygiene practices (using the appropriate technique and according to the WHO 5 Moments) within the health care workflow.

  • Promote inclusion of hand hygiene within national IPC action plans, as well as standard operating procedures (SOPs) at facility level, according to the recommendations of the WHO Global action plan and monitoring framework indicators and targets to be achieved incrementally by 2030.

  • Raise awareness that one of the WHO global action plan and monitoring framework indicators on IPC is hand hygiene compliance monitoring and feedback, to be established as a key national indicator, at the very least in all reference hospitals by 2026.

  • Encourage countries to act to improve IPC, including hand hygiene, as outlined by WHO.
